While critical for host defense against pathogens, it also drives inflammation in various diseases. Recently, the clinical use of complement inhibitors has surged,1 with the latest Food and Drug Administration approvals in IgA nephropathy and C3 glomerulopathy. Still, the complement system is frequently oversimplified as "merely" a downstream mediator of antibodies, which represents only one aspect of its multifaceted role.
